Maybe you’re experiencing throbbing tooth or gum pain, or perhaps you chipped, cracked, or even fully knocked out a tooth or dental device. When the unexpected happens to your teeth, you are likely experiencing a dental emergency.
At Hooks Family Dentistry, we offer emergency dental services to provide our patients peace of mind even when the unexpected occurs. Below we show how you can determine what is and isn’t a dental emergency and what you should do if you experience one.
How to Determine a Dental Emergency
Every situation is different; what might be a dental emergency for you may not be for someone else. But there are a few common signs to look out for to determine if you are experiencing a dental emergency, including:
- Excessive bleeding and/or swelling
- Having a broken or faulty dental device
- Having a chipped, broken, or completely knocked out tooth
- Experiencing complications after a dental procedure
- Having an abscessed tooth
How to Handle a Dental Emergency
If you are experiencing one or more of the above symptoms, the best thing you can do is try to stay calm and not panic. Call your dentist right away to see if they can squeeze you in for an appointment. In the meantime, for bleeding, try to curb the bleeding with gauze. For swelling and pain, ice your cheeks in 10-minute increments. If you have knocked out a tooth, try to preserve it in a glass of milk and bring it to your dentist’s office.
