How to Avoid Holiday Cavities

During the holiday season, our diets tend to change for the worse. Our team at Hooks Family Dentistry understands that sometimes it is impossible to say no to a slice of holiday pie or a Christmas cookie. You’ll probably be relieved to hear that we encourage you to enjoy holiday treats – in moderation. Without moderation, however, you increase your risk for developing cavities. santa's hand reaching for christmas cookie and candycane

What Causes Cavities?

Your mouth is chock full of bacteria that feed on sugars and starches that you eat and then release acid. This means that holiday staples like pecan pie are a field day for acid-producing bacteria. Acid progressively wears on our enamel. Without proper oral hygiene, it can create a hole (called a cavity) in enamel that exposes the delicate inside of your tooth. This leaves your tooth prone to infection and tooth decay.

Avoid Cavities with a Good Oral Hygiene Routine

The best way to avoid cavities is to practice good oral hygiene at home. Be sure to brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time and floss every day to keep bacteria at bay and prevent plaque from forming. You should also visit our office regularly for cleanings and exams so Dr. Hooks can keep an eye on your teeth and help you avoid any potential problems.

Don’t Forget to Take Advantage of Your Benefits!

If you have dental insurance, now is a great time to check to see if you’ve used all your dental benefits for the year. Most dental insurance plans reset at the first of the year and do not roll over. If you realized you have a professional cleaning or some other service left to use this year, schedule it before the end of the year to avoid losing it.
