What Is the Difference Between Cerec & Traditional Crowns?

Here at Hooks Family Dentistry, we’re excited to offer our patients some of the best dental technology around. In this post, we’ll be diving into one of those state-of-the-art technologies: CEREC crowns. How do they compare to traditional crowns? Read on to find out!

What’s a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a protective cap that fits over the tooth. With traditional crowns, you’ll come into your dentist’s office and have an impression of the tooth made. That impression will then be sent to an off-site lab where the crown will be created. After a few weeks, you’ll head back to the dentist to get your crown fitted and bonded.

Who Needs a Crown?

Dental crowns come in handy in different scenarios. They can serve to protect a vulnerable tooth from decay or breakage; restore a broken or worn tooth; cover a very large filling; mask a discolored or an oddly shaped tooth; support a bridge; and more.

The CEREC Difference

No more waiting for your crown to be created, CEREC technology allows us to offer same-day crowns! Here’s a glimpse inside the CEREC process. We’ll start by taking high-res, 3D images of your tooth, and choose the custom shape and color. That information goes to our on-site milling machine, which will construct the crown out of the same strong composite material used in traditional crowns. Once it’s ready, we’ll fit and bond the restoration. And voila, you’ll have a brand new, custom restoration in no time!
