Here at Hooks Family Dentistry, we offer emergency dental services that diagnose and treat oral health problems. How do you know if an emergency visit is necessary? Here are the most common dental emergencies:
1. Chipped & Cracked Teeth
Even the strongest teeth can chip sometimes if you bite into something hard or get injured. Some cracks and chips are very small, so you might not notice them at first, but any chip or crack compromises your oral health. Further damage to the tooth is more likely, and depending on how bad the chip or crack is, it can expose the inner part of your tooth. Even if you can’t see the crack or chip, you might feel pain and increased sensitivity. As soon as you think you may have a chipped or cracked tooth, please give us a call.
2. Lost Filling or Restoration
If you lose or damage a filling or dental restoration, it’s just as serious as damaging your real teeth. The damage leaves your mouth vulnerable to decay and bacteria, and you’ll most likely experience sensitivity or pain. Dr. Hooks and the team will examine the problem and then recommend the best course of treatment.
3. Abscessed Tooth
When you have an abscessed tooth, it means the tooth is infected. This is a potentially life-threatening situation, because if untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of your jaw, face, and your whole body. An abscess can cause symptoms like pain, sensitivity, a fever, and swelling. It’s very important to seek out emergency treatment.
4. Swollen or Inflamed Gums
When your gums become swollen or inflamed, it’s your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. The most common cause of swollen, inflamed, and bleeding gums is gum disease. Most people who have gingivitis (the early stage of gum disease) don’t know they have it because the symptoms can start out fairly mild. Swollen gums, however, is a sign you have gum disease. Infections can also cause swollen gums.
