How Do Dogs Keep Their Teeth Clean?

Four Dogs Showing Off Their Oral Health

When you’re in show business, bright, healthy pearly whites are a necessity – and that certainly goes for Reveille, female collie dog and the official mascot of Texas A&M. Many of us at Hooks Family Dentistry are dog owners ourselves and caring for our four-legged friends’ teeth is just as important to their health as regular visits to the veterinarian. Just like with our human patients, preventive care can help prevent more serious dental issues from developing. Dr. Hooks and our team have compiled the following three tips to help you keep your dogs’ teeth healthy and strong.

1. Train Early

From the time your dog is a puppy, help them get acclimated to having their teeth brushed. If you start this habit early, caring for their teeth throughout their life will be a breeze.

2. Get the Right Supplies

To properly brush your pup’s teeth, you’ll need the right tools. You can use a specialized pet toothbrush, a child-sized toothbrush, or even a piece of gauze wrapped around your finger. No matter what you use, be sure that you can comfortably reach each of your dog’s teeth. You’ll also need specialized pet toothpaste – this toothpaste comes in tasty flavors like chicken liver and is easy on your dog’s stomach. Never use human toothpaste or baking soda, as they can be harmful to your pet.

3. Treat Your Dog

After brushing your dog’s teeth, reward them with a treat, a walk, or whatever your dog’s referred playtime is. This way, they’ll associate brushing time with a fun reward.

While you’re taking such good care of your dog’s teeth, don’t forget your own preventive care routine! Brush your teeth twice daily for two minutes each time, floss every day, and visit our office regularly for cleanings and exams.
