Typically, young adults get their wisdom teeth removed, usually because they’re growing in crookedly and/or becoming infected. But if you have impacted wisdom teeth (or, wisdom teeth that haven’t erupted from under the gumline yet) and they’re not painful, do you still need to get them removed?
In this post, we’ll review when it’s necessary to get your wisdom teeth removed, and when you may not have to.
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that you will receive, and they typically grow in between the ages of 15 and 25. Located at the far back of your upper and lower jaws, wisdom teeth don’t serve any important function and can actually introduce issues if they grow in, since they often grow in crookedly or at an angle which can affect your bite and alignment or cause overcrowding. That’s why many dentists advocate for their removal.
Why Would I Get My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Some of the reasons why you’d need your wisdom teeth removed are:
- Potential damage to other teeth, since having another set of molars can push existing teeth around
- Sinus issues, since wisdom teeth can add pressure to your sinuses and cause pain and infections
- Gum inflammation
- Alignment issues introduced by wisdom teeth
- Jaw damage from cysts that could grow around wisdom teeth
If you have wisdom teeth that are not expected to grow in crookedly or impact your bite and alignment, then you shouldn’t have to worry about getting them removed. And if you have impacted wisdom teeth that won’t erupt any time soon, you can wait on getting them removed too.
